The programme (9.30am until 3.00pm)
The day begins with a look at lime through history, its use within the context of historic structures, its chemistry and how it differs from cement and NHL. The seminar will list the benefits of traditional lime including how it provides permeability to masonry. Delegates will also gain knowledge of Historic England’s current research into NHL strength gains and the hot lime revival.
Tea/coffee (25 mins)
The second half of the morning will focus on the appropriate use of traditional lime mortar within the conservation industry which will be supported by case studies. Delegates will be taken through the whole specification process which covers the importance of analysis, selecting an appropriate mortar and effective maintenance to ensure longevity of the mortar. The seminar will highlight the consequences of inappropriate mortar specification.
