This seminar/workshop is suitable for those involved in the repair of traditional and historic buildings, particularly those who specify and/or supervise such work; surveyors, architects, conservation/planning officers, structural engineers, clerk of works, project managers/supervisors etc. It may also be suitable for contractors looking to enhance their knowledge and understanding of working with traditional and historic buildings, or owners of older properties with some background building/construction knowledge. We assume attendees will have some background knowledge and experience in relation to traditional and historic buildings, so it may not be suitable for homeowners interested in learning more from a beginners perspective.

This seminar/workshop is a mix of theory and practice, delivered by Andrew Bradley, Stonemason and Craig Frew, Historic Buildings Consultant. There will be practical demonstrations alongside illustrated presentations. The set-up will be relatively informal and discussion/interaction will be encouraged. Please note this is not a hands-on course – we couldn’t possibly cover all of the above elements within a one-day course. If you are looking for hands-on courses, contact us and we’ll point you in the right direction. You should expect to enhance your knowledge and understanding of stonework conservation and repair and benefit from networking opportunities on the day. Delegate packs will be provided along with CPD attendance certificates for your records.

The tutors

Andrew is a self-employed stonemason with 40 years’ experience, having achieved his City & Guilds and Advanced City & Guilds qualifications. He worked with English Heritage and has undertaken the SPAB Craft Fellowship and the Quinque Fellowship (North America). He previously worked with National Trust for Scotland at Culzean Castle, setting up their apprenticeship scheme and training centre.

Craig is a historic buildings consultant with 20 years’ experience providing technical and conservation advice for the repair of traditional and historic buildings. He previously worked as Technical Consultant for a large stonemasonry contractor, was Senior Buildings Consultant with the Scottish Lime Centre Trust and Conservation Officer for Dundee City Council. He is a Full Member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC).
