Historic England HELM Training – The NPPF Decoded: Archaeology

Join this course to enhance your understanding the planning process with regards to archaeology and recent change to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) in particular.

This course is for professional archaeologists working in the planning system, either as a local authority archaeological adviser, or as a contracting archaeologist advising clients on the planning process. You may also find this course of interest if you are an experienced planner with an interest in planning cases with significant archaeological impact. By undertaking this course, delegates will:

  • Understand the changes to the NPPF and will be able to apply enhanced knowledge of the planning system as a whole when making responses to planning cases.
  • Have a clear understanding of the designation process in relation to scheduling and know where to go for further information as to whether a site is of national importance and therefore equivalent to a scheduled site.
  • Gain knowledge about relevant case studies (legal and public access examples), which will be highlighted and additional resources signposted.
  • Identify how best to respond to a range of planning opportunities e.g. PiP, Local Plan consultation, Scoping/EIA.
  • Confidently apply their enhanced knowledge in planning responses, and in dialogue with planning colleagues. Proposing alternative archaeological management solutions to increase public benefit.
