NHIG – VIRTUAL – Designing New Ironwork for Heritage Settings

14 July 2020 - 19:00 - 20:00

Free

As part of the York Consortium for Conservation and Craftsmanship free series of ‘Second Tuesday Talks’, Bethan Griffiths will reprise her talk originally given at the NHIG’s event at the Victoria and Albert Museum. If you missed that memorable event, now’s your chance to catch up. In addition, she will be joined ‘In Conversation’ at the end for by  a conservation officer and conservation architect to give a more rounded perspective to the issues relating to new work in heritage settings.

Bethan will explore how new ironwork is designed for heritage settings, including some fully illustrated case studies.

New designs in heritage settings will always stimulate debate. Whether the design is reticent and recessive, or boldly contemporary, there will always be vehement advocates for and against the outcome.

So how do you go about creating an imaginative and confident response, derived from the context, which not only respects but also enhances historic surroundings?

Bethan will look at how, as designers, we can understand, respond to and engage with the unique places for which they are commissioned.

Although this webinar is specific to ironwork the same issues relate to other craft disciplines.
