Place Services – Archaeological Desk Based Assessments

20 January - 09:30 - 12:30

This morning course is aimed at archaeologists and heritage professionals who use, write or commission archaeological desk-based assessments (DBAs). It will address the different elements of the DBA to equip delegates with insight into and an understanding of:

  • Exactly what DBAs are and when they are required;
  • Their main purpose;
  • The contents of a DBA;
  • How they fit in within the stages of development; and
  • How they can be used to provide meaningful assessment of significance and potential for impact of a development to archaeological significance.

The course will be led by Tim Murphy Historic Environment Manager and Richard Havis Principal Historic Environment Consultant at Place Services. Tim (IHBC, MCIfA) has over ten years’ experience working in the private sector as a Heritage Consultant across the UK and Ireland. He is the Historic Environment Manager at Place Services, managing both historic building and archaeological development control support to several local planning authorities in the east and south east of England. Richard (FSA, MCIfA) is an archaeologist with over 30 years professional experience, including an extensive background in field work and the provision of curatorial advice, and considerable experience in writing, commissioning and approving DBAs.

Tea and biscuits will be provided.
