Place Services – Industrial Heritage

5 April 2022 - 09:30 - 16:00

£75

This course is aimed at anyone interested in industrial heritage and architecture, or those who are currently involved in the conservation or sustainable reuse of this typology. The mini-conference will provide insight into a range of industrial typologies across Essex.

We are delighted to be holding this course at the East Anglian Railway Museum, part of the branch line from Marks Tey to Sudbury which crosses the impressive Chappel viaduct. This site is now run as a museum, and is still a working railway station. It is renowned for its open days and events, which reveal a rich history. There will be time within the day to explore this unique site.

Speakers include:

Wayne Cocroft, FSA. Wayne is an archaeologist and Manager of Historic England’s Investigation East team. He will be presenting on ’The challenges of C20th industrial heritage’, to share his insight into the topic.

Tony Crosby, Chairman at Essex Industrial Archaeology Group, will provide a talk on the essential but often overlooked public utilities. Tony will explore the importance and progression of water, gas and electric, and how this can be seen reflected within industrial architecture.

Tim Murphy, Historic Environment Manager at Place Services, will discuss the development of the factory in the 20th century. This talk will consider the change in form that occurred as a result of the use of concrete and the new ‘daylight factory’. The talk will also explore how the image of the factory changed and what was once perhaps more utilitarian, became a marketing tool using architecture as an advert.

Mike Tarbard of the Bata Heritage Centre and David Ridler, manager of the former Bata factory site, will provide a talk on East Tilbury’s iconic Bata shoe factory.

Elphin Watkin will be providing a talk on Maltings and Breweries. Elphin Watkins is a highly experienced researcher in traditional buildings and is also a joint President of the Herts and Essex Architectural Society.
