This half day course will examine the appropriate use of the whole range of lime mortars in the context of material science, actual built fabric and historic texts upon lime use. It will give students an understanding into traditional lime mortars. The course will also give a practical understanding of slaking and mixing methods and will include a demonstration of mixing. As a result of the course trainees will gain a solid understanding of which lime mortar to use for different situations and purposes. This will enable professionals to specify a variety of lime mortars with confidence and authority and to understand the requirements of each, enhancing their ability to understand effective repair buildings of traditional construction and performance.

The course will include:

  • A brief history of Lime.
  • The Lime cycle.
  • The different qualities of NHL vs. Putty mixes.
  • Material sourcing and the types of Aggregate.
  • The Advantages of Lime in conservation.
  • Selecting products and specifications with the safely aspects & winter working.
  • We will also be providing demonstration of lime slaking.
