SLCT – Specifying Mortars for Repair, Restoration, and New Build

19 August 2021 - 09:30 - 12:30

£30

Are you working with mortars or need to provide specification for a job? Then this online seminar is for you!

Successful specifications for mortars need to take a holistic view of the building or structure and also be easily understood for communication with those undertaking the work on site. Mortars are a fundamental part of unit masonry construction and render work to a wide range of different backgrounds, whether solid walls, on lath or on cavity wall construction. Choosing or designing the right mortar is essential to ensure compatibility with the background surface, to keep a building weather proof, and to the aesthetics of the structure.

This introduction to specifying involves looking at the performance characteristics of building materials including substrates, relating this to exposure, environment, location, the nature of the mortar work and the time of year of working. Understanding why failures occur also helps to inform the specification process and this seminar looks at case studies of failures, so attendees will know how to avoid them!

Suitable for:

This online seminar is aimed at those specifying or working with mortars including building contractors, planners, architects, surveyors, engineers and other heritage professionals and students.
