SPAB – Humble Heritage Workshop – Lime Production **POSTPONED**

Over the two day course, participants will have the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience with traditional British hydraulic limes and field kilns for local production, gaining an advanced understanding of the complete process of burning Grey Chalk.

With the expert guidance of two experienced experts,  delegates will leave having produced their own feebly hydraulic lime, which was historically an incredibly popular and versatile building material.

Topics Covered:

  • Field Kiln construction methods
  • How to source suitable local materials for lime production
  • How to successfully fire a field kiln, including monitoring methods
  • The science and technology of British hydraulic limes
  • Why burning British materials is important
  • The importance of lime in the current climate crisis

Tutors:

Alongside the hands-on tutorials, the course will include lectures, a bonfire social in the evening (at a small extra cost to cover refreshments), and plenty of opportunity to get to know like minded enthusiasts.

A light lunch is included in the course fee, and certificates of attendance are available for CPD purposes on request. This course will be based in Boxley, Kent at the SPAB’s Old House Project. Any remaining material produced during the course will be used in live building projects on site.

The course will start at 9am each day and we aim to finish by 5pm.
