UAH – VIRTUAL – The Great Northern Railway – The Architecture of William Hemmingway Mills

25 June 2020 - 19:00 - 20:00

Established in 1876 as an amalgamation of companies, the GNR set about standardising its inherited infrastructure. With the company’s first Engineer in Chief, William Hemingway Mills, at the helm a new style of polychromatic brick architecture emerged. In her presentation, PhD candidate at Trinity College Dublin, Siobhan Osgood will illustrate the examples of Mills’ architecture in Ulster, showing its development from drawing board to a bold declaration of company identity. Siobhan was awarded the Industrial Archaeology Dissertation Prize, presented at the annual Society for Industrial Archaeology in Chicago, and is an Irish Research Council funded scholar.

Members £7.50, Non-Members £10.
