Yorkshire Branch – Hot Lime Workshop
14 March 2020
This one-day event run by North York Moors National Park and IHBC Yorkshire, hosted by local stonemason Nigel Copsey and a National Park Conservation Officer.
Local stonemason and lime mortar expert Nigel Copsey (the Earth, Stone and Lime Company, and lead on practical workshops at the University of York) will give a presentation and demonstration on hot mixed lime mortars, their technique and use; imparting understanding of the physics of historic structures and best practice for conservation.
This will be followed in the afternoon by hands on practical work applying lime mortars and renders to buildings associated with East Mines at Rosedale. This will help to preserve these important landscape features and protect the industrial heritage of the North York Moors. This will give participants confidence to work with lime mortar and a basic understanding of how historic structures work. Mixing will be done by hand and wearing of goggles and gloves is recommended (provided). All work will be done alongside under the direct supervision of expert stonemason Nigel Copsey. For certain elements work from scaffold is required, however, there will be plenty of work to do from ground level if there is a desire not to go up scaffold.
