The event will be led by Judith Miller (Senior Conservation Officer, Sunderland City Council) and will focus on the ongoing regeneration of Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, and its Townscape Heritage Scheme.

Sunderland City Council was awarded £1.9m from the National Lottery Heritage Fund in June 2018 to undertake a Townscape Heritage Scheme within the Bishopwearmouth Conservation Area. The scheme has provided grant aid for building restoration and enhancement works to historic buildings including Sunderland Empire, Mowbray Almshouses, The Dun Cow, The Peacock and The Rabbit and work is currently underway on Church Lane and Victoria Buildings. Minster Park, which was originally the heart of Bishopwearmouth village, has been transformed, with the creation of a new central seating area on the footprint of the historic streets of Little Gate and South Gate, new granite paving, new steps to Low Row, improved lighting and new interpretation.

At this event THS staff will talk about the process of putting together the bid and how the project fits into wider heritage and regeneration work in the city. Led by Sunderland City Council’s Senior Conservation Officer, we will take a walk around the area to see the repair and conservation work and discuss the successes and challenges of the project. This will be an informal event with plenty of time for discussions, questions, tea and cake.

The event (2-4pm) will start and finish at Sunderland Minster – 309 High St W, Sunderland SR1 3ET.
