Event Description

Aimed at both craft practitioners and consultative professionals, this 2-day course held in the centre of the World Heritage City of Bath provides an introduction to the conservation of historic ironwork.

Lectures cover: historical context, metallurgy of wrought iron and steels, traditional tools, techniques, materials, design and manufacture, with a focus on the processes of restoration, surface preparation and treatments, specification & standards for heritage ironwork contracts, including a procurement and pricing exercise.

The lectures will be complemented by a walking tour & site visit to survey historic ironwork and develop a strategy for its conservation.

The IHBC (Institute of Historic Building Conservation) recognises this course as contributing to mandatory CPD requirements for its Members.

Aims of the day

Course tutors Geoff Wallis (former Director of Dorothea Restorations) and Andy Thearle (Ironart of Bath) will guide you through the basic principles of assessing historic ironwork and making decisions about its care. Tender procedures often require the commissioner of the work to have knowledge of the medium in order to procure the best value. We aim to equip those wishing to commission work on listed ironwork with information they will find essential in the writing of specifications.

VENUE: The Museum of Bath at Work is approximately a 20 minute walk from the train station. If arriving by car, the best option would be to park at Lansdown Park & Ride which is easily accessible from the M4. From here the 31 bus takes you close to the museum (Belvedere stop).
