RSUA – Expert Session: Retrofitting Traditional and Historic Buildings

As awareness of conservation grows, it becomes ever more important to understand the particular challenges of retrofitting traditional and heritage buildings.  Architects are the custodians of our built environment and this expert-led three hour seminar will introduce you to the techniques and practices that you will need to repurpose older buildings for the modern age.

Course content

In this afternoon seminar Professor Edwards will outline a holistic approach to energy efficiency and retrofit of traditional buildings taking account of latest standards, practices and research and will cover the following areas:

  • IHBC Retrofit Guidance – the holistic process.
  • Mainstream standards and guidance: BSI PAS 2035, PAS 2030 and PAS 2037, covering dwellings and commercial buildings and their applicability to traditional and historic buildings
  • BS EN 16883: Conservation of Cultural Heritage: Guidelines for Improving the Energy Efficiency of Historic Buildings – a summary of approach
  • BS 7913: 2013: Guide to the Conservation of Historic Buildings – providing the optimum approach
  • Planning a whole building approach and the use of risk matrix’s and online tools
  • Resourcing and implementing retrofit work including quality management
  • Assessing buildings for energy efficiency and retrofit
  • Retrofit design – principles and practice
  • Unintended consequences of retrofit
  • Training and education opportunities

Speaker info

Professor John Edwards (MA, DipBldgCons, CEnv, FCIOB, FRICS, IHBC) is a Director of Edwards Hart Consultants.  Professor Edwards is a Chartered Environmentalist and has been a practitioner in the sustainability and energy efficiency of buildings since 1981 involving buildings of all kinds and with roots in building pathology.  John has experience of large-scale insulation projects and dwellings as well managing a mechanical and electrical design team with a focus on energy efficiency of historic and other public / commercial buildings in a value conscious environment.

John has a track record in developing projects to traditional and historic buildings with a holistic approach to energy efficiency and sustainability and formerly worked at English Heritage / Historic and later at Cadw as Assistant Director. Since 2014 he has been a Director of Wales based Edwards Hart Consultants undertaking research, refurbishment /conservation projects and developing and delivering training in the UK, Europe and beyond. John has contributed to numerous standards and guidance including authorship of IHBC guidance on retrofit and is currently Professor on Practice at the University of Wales Trinity St David.
