VAG – Kings Lynn Spring Conference 2022

23 April 2022

Vernacular Architecture Group – Spring Conference 2022

The Norfolk Historic Buildings Group (NHBG) have kindly suggested
a hybrid event as an alternative to the postponed Norfolk Spring
Conference. This will be split into two components; an online day of
talks and lectures, and a day visit to Kings Lynn. These two events can be booked separately and details can be found on the booking form:  VAG spring conference 2022

Online event Saturday 23rd April 2022

This will take the form of presentations on various aspects of Norfolk’s vernacular buildings that would have been part of the original planned full conference. These will cover the Norfolk landscape context, domestic wall paintings, merchant houses of Norwich, buildings in Diss, a tour of three timber-framed houses that would have been visited, some of the smaller houses in Norwich and Cathedral Close, and a tour of two of the churches that would have been visited.  Booking can be found on Eventbrite and is free of charge. An email will be circulated shortly with information on how to book. Please ensure you have provided the Membership Secretary with your email address if you wish to receive this information in future.

Day visit to Kings Lynn Saturday 30th April 2022

A new town, planted by the Bishop of Norwich in the late eleventh
century, Lynn was an important medieval port and was the fourth
highest-taxed town in the country in 1204, later to become part of the Hanseatic League. Prosperity meant that many fine buildings were erected in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Many of them survive, including two churches, two Guildhalls, several merchants’ houses and several large warehouses. Parts of some of the surviving buildings will be open to VAG members. After the League unravelled, Lynn continued to trade, particularly in wine and coal and for several decades was part of the whaling trade.
