Victorian Society – A Visit to Churches in Watford
30 April 2022 - 14:00 - 17:00
£17Saturday 30 April, 2pm – Led by Peter Howell. Meet at Holy Rood Catholic Church
Join us for a walk to the Victorian churches of Watford. The first stop is Holy Rood, John Francis Bentley’s finest work, apart from Westminster Cathedral. It is lavishly fitted up, almost entirely by Bentley. St Mary’s Church is the parish church of Watford, C13-C16, restored 1870-1 by J.T. Christopher. Screens, stalls and pews by G.G. Scott 1848 (not clear how much survived the recent reordering). Monuments include two grand ones by Nicholas Stone. Some good glass. St John’s Church, Sutton Road 1891-3 by J.T. Christopher and E.E. White. Fine interior with vaulted chancel. Screens, stalls etc by J.N. Comper 1902-27
