World Heritage Site: Saltaire

Saltaire is an exceptionally complete and well preserved example of a mid 19^th century industrial textiles village. Its textile mills, public buildings and workers’ housing are built in a harmonious style of high architectural quality.  The plan survives intact, giving a vivid impression of the philanthropic paternalistic approach to industrial management, social welfare and planning in the UK and beyond. The architectural and engineering quality of the complete ensemble, comprising Salt’s Mill buildings and New Mill, employees’ housing, almshouses, Dining Room, Congregational Church, Hospital, School, Institute and Roberts Park make it outstanding by comparison with other similar complexes. The town planning and social welfare ideas at Saltaire were influential in the 19^th century garden city movement in the UK and internationally. Saltaire testifies to the pride and power of basic industries such as textiles for the economy of Great Britain and the world in the 19^th and early 20^th centuries.

Sheena, BA, PGDip Planning, MA (dist.), Dip Bldg Cons (RICS), Cert Urban Environmental Design (dist.), has over 30 years’ experience and qualifications in planning, conservation and regeneration. Sheena has worked for Local Authorities in the North including Peak National Park, Sheffield Regeneration Unit and a charity, War Memorials Trust. Secured funding for Halifax Townscape Heritage Initiative, managed grant schemes in Calderdale and Kirklees. Joined Bradford Council in 2018 to protect, enhance and promote Saltaire World Heritage Site.

Maggie, SRN, DMS, MA Social Work: Social Care, MA Social Research. Maggie’s first qualification was as a nurse, She later volunteered and then was employed by a national charity supporting lone parents. In the 1980’s she commenced work in local government in Bradford to establish workplace childcare. Afterwards, she was appointed as a Senior Assistant Education Officer for Manchester Council in 1990. Maggie later became UK Director of Children’s Services for Barnardo’s, before moving to the Senior Civil Service as OFSTED’s first director of early years services. On retirement from full time work Maggie taught in HE and FE in Bradford and continued her lifelong volunteering work in the Bradford District holding various trustee roles. Currently Maggie is a trustee for The Saltaire World Heritage Education Association, managing the Saltaire Collection.
