Basic Masonry Skills Course at SLCT

This two day course is suitable for those with limited or no experience and who wish to attain basic stonemasonry skills on natural sandstone blocks.

Learners will be introduced to the tools and materials required to produce a flat surface on a block of sandstone and then effect different surface tooling with margins as found on many of our historic buildings.

Learners can take home their practice stones at the end of the day.

Learning Outcomes

  • How to take a stone out of ‘twist’ to true level and plumb
  • Put a true flat surface on a slab of stone
  • Effect different tooled surfaces, eg stugged, broached, droved and rock faced finishes

Course Programme

Day 1

  • Health and safety – including use of ‘Airstream’ hoods to minimize inhalation of airborne crystalline silica
  • Introduction to the tools used to cut and dress natural sandstone blocks
  • Taking a stone out of ‘twist’ using 4 wooden blocks and 2 squares
  • Production of a true flat surface on a block of sandstone

Day 2

Produce different surface tooling finishes including:

  • Broached
  • Droved
  • Stugged
  • Rock faced, all within tooled margins on one block of stone.
