Aberdeen City Heritage Trust – Retrofit the North

In this first Aberdeen Heritage Lecture of 2022 and following COP26 in Glasgow last year , Calum will provide insights into how to go about retrofitting traditionally constructed and historic buildings.

Speaker details:

Calum Maclean is a practising architect with advanced accreditation in conservation of historic buildings.

He was raised in the Highlands before leaving to study architecture at Edinburgh College of Art in 1987. After that he spent 10 years working in Ireland before returning to the Highlands in 2003, to work with Colin Munro at Thomas Munro & Co. In 2017 he established his own practice, MAAC Studio working exclusively on the restoration and conservation of historic buildings and encouraging the appreciation of our traditional buildings within the community.

He is a trustee and director of the Built Environment Forum Scotland and he is a member of the Conservation Committee of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland. He has completed PAS 2035 level 5 – Retrofit Co-ordinator training and has been assisting the RIAS and BEFS in their responses to the development of retrofit policy in Scotland.

In addition to the professional activities, Calum is also an author. In 2020 his book, The Architecture of Inverness was published providing a unique insight to the city and its rich historic and architectural development. He is currently working on a new book that will celebrate the life and work of one of Inverness’s most famous architects, Alexander Ross.
