CHN – Europe Regional Climate Heritage Forum

19 November 2020 - 10:30 - 12:00

Free

In partnership with Europa Nostra, ICOMOS and with the support of the European Investment Bank Institute

Climate change is one of the most significant threats to people and their cultural heritage worldwide. The European Green Deal (EGD) is one of the planet’s most ambitious plans to tackle it, which is why cultural heritage needs the EGD to succeed. Cultural heritage offers immense potential to drive climate action and support a just transition to a low carbon, climate resilient future, which is why the European Green Deal needs cultural heritage to succeed.

As part of the Culture x Climate Regional Climate Heritage Forum series, the Climate Heritage Network Europe Region is partnering with Europa Nostra to preview the European Heritage Green Paper. The Green Paper is designed to lay out the power of cultural heritage to contribute to achieving the EGD’s ambitions and to mobilise the heritage community to realise that potential. It offers a template for transformative climate action by the cultural heritage sector around the world.

Dr Ewan Hyslop, Europe Region CHN Co-Chair, will open the programme. Project lead Andrew Potts of ICOMOS and Europa Nostra Secretary-General Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailović will present the Green Paper framework. Members of the project’s Expert Advisory Group will also field participant’s questions about the draft paper. Experts are Dr Antonia Gravagnuolo, Keith Jones, Dr Johanna Leissner, Ian Lumley, Valeria Marcolin and Jermina Stanojev.

A reflection on Green Paper project will be offered by Gijs de Vries, senior visiting fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Reactions will also be presented on behalf of EU Institutions including Francisco de Paula Coelho, Dean, European Investment Bank Institute.

The European Heritage Green Paper has been developed by Europa Nostra in collaboration with ICOMOS and with the support of the European Investment Bank Institute. The Green Paper is planned to be formally issued in the coming months and will be widely disseminated to the EU Institutions and other stakeholders concerned with the European Green Deal.
