A programme of six free, online courses aimed at the most pressing needs in the Trinity Triangle, delivered by a team of highly experienced current practitioners and trainers in their diverse fields of heritage building conservation.  Attend as many or as few as you like.

What makes the buildings in Hastings special? A look at what makes a building typical of your town and what makes it of historical importance locally and nationally. Discover how these features relate to listed buildings and planning applications.

Tutor: Amanda Kersey

An experienced project coordinator working with English Heritage and Historic England. Extensive training in architectural heritage, the historic environment and planning.

Plasterworks

Introduction to plasterworks in Hastings older buildings

There are plenty of plastered and rendered buildings in Hastings. They tell one of the stories of the town. Plasterers use detective work to help them decide on the materials and techniques to use for restoration.

Discover more about historic plasterwork and how to use it sympathetically in older buildings.

 Tutor: Sarah Mayfield

Sarah learnt the range of historic building practical skills and use of materials before specialising in plasterwork inspired by the 18th century immigrant craftsmen who came to this country and created stunning plasterwork. Mayfield Heritage Ltd was formed in 2019 and offers historic plaster surveys and contracts for challenging historic buildings.

Damp repair

Damp repair and maintenance in older buildings

One of the main causes of building decay is water in the wrong place, sometimes from dramatic flooding but more often from slow unnoticed damp into the building. All sorts of materials are affected by water in different ways. Discover how builders need to intervene to prevent further damage.

A historic building consultant with a background in education, archaeology and conservation. He advises on the repair and maintenance of all historic structures and provides training at all levels for the building conservation industry. He undertakes statements of significance, impact assessments, specifications for repairs, and supervision of contractors on site.

Leadwork

Leadwork for slate and tile roofing on older buildings

Lead has been used to keep the weather out of buildings for many centuries, and it still is. Leadwork on roofs is a great addition to traditional plumbing courses. Discover more about this eco-friendly material and its uses on our local buildings.

An experienced practitioner, technical and training officer. Now working with National Construction Training Services, (NCTS ) delivering practical training, qualification and technical assistance for users of Lead Sheet for construction.

Bricks and Mortar

Bricks and mortar for older buildings

Bricks have been a principal building material in many parts of the country including East Sussex since the 16th century. Looking closely at historic brickwork can give clues as to how the bricks were manufactured and laid.  Discover the detective skills required to identify the causes of decay.   We also take a look at the importance of finding the correct materials for re-pointing.

How to make better repair and maintenance decisions for older building

In dealing with the future of old buildings, it is essential to understand their history, materials, structure and the details however small which make those buildings special or even unique. Discover how those details need to be retained or restored during refurbishments.
