Valuing Culture and Heritage Capital Conference

11 March 2022 - 09:00 - 13:30

Free

The Culture and Heritage Capital Programme was launched in January 2021 with the publication of ‘Valuing culture and heritage capital: a framework towards informing decision making’. A culture and heritage capital approach to policy and decision making considers the full value of culture and heritage to society. For a short introduction to the Culture and Heritage Capital Programme view this video from Lord Mendoza.

You will hear from experts and leaders in the sector who will be discussing the importance of this work, how it is being delivered and how you can use the resources made available by DCMS and partners. This will be a key opportunity for stakeholders to shape the programme going forward and give feedback.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Nigel Huddlestone MP, Minister for Sport, Tourism, Heritage and Civil Society
  • Professor Christopher Smith, Executive Chair, AHRC
  • Lord Mendoza, Commissioner for Cultural Recovery and Renewal at DCMS
  • Sir Laurie Magnus, Chairman of Historic England
  • Darren Henley, Chief Executive of Arts Council England
  • Ian Bateman, Professor of Environmental Economics at University of Exeter
  • May Cassar CBE, Professor of Sustainable Heritage at UCL
  • Helen Chaterjee, Professor of Biology at University College London

Further information about the Cultural and Heritage Capital Programme

Currently there is no agreed approach to measuring the benefits of culture and heritage and as a result these important benefits are often underrepresented in funding decisions, leading to an underinvestment in these assets. A culture and heritage capital approach to policy and decision making considers the value of culture and heritage to society. DCMS will publish research, data, guidance and tools to help organisations make a stronger case for investment in culture and heritage assets. The approach will enable organisations to use more evidence based methods within the decision making and funding bids. These aims are consistent with the HM Treasury Green Book principles. Further information can be found on the Culture and Heritage Capital portal.
